Gynaecological Laparoscopy

Diagnostic laparoscopy in gynaecology is a minimally invasive procedure used to inspect the organs in the abdomen and pelvis, primarily for diagnosis, and occasionally for treatment. Small incisions are made to insert a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera, allowing clear visualisation of the area. Compared to traditional open surgery, this method offers benefits such as faster recovery, less discomfort, and smaller scars, although it may have some limitations.

Minimally Invasive:  Laparoscopy uses small incisions (typically 5-10mm) instead of a large single incision like open surgery.

Visual Examination:  A laparoscope, equipped with a camera, transmits images of the pelvic and abdominal organs to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to visualise the area.

Diagnosis and Treatment:  It can be used to diagnose conditions like endometriosis, pelvic pain, and infertility, and can also be used to treat certain conditions during the same procedure.

Examples: Diagnose and treat endometriosis, remove scar tissue (adhesions), Treat ectopic pregnancies, investigate infertility, Remove ovarian cysts.

Advantages of Gynaecological laparoscopy

Faster Recovery: Smaller incisions lead to quicker healing and a shorter hospital stay.

Less Pain: Patients generally experience less pain post-surgery compared to open procedures.

Reduced Scarring: Smaller incisions result in minimal scarring.

Lower Risk of Complications: Lower risk of infection, blood loss, and blood clots.

Improved Visualization: The magnified view provided by the laparoscope allows for more precise surgery.

Potential for Same-Day Discharge: Some laparoscopic procedures can be performed on a day surgery basis.

Disadvantages of Gynaecological laparoscopy

Potential for General Anaesthesia Risks: Although laparoscopic surgery is generally safe, there are risks associated with general anaesthesia, such as breathing difficulties or allergic reactions.

Possible Surgical Complications: Although less likely than with open surgery, complications can still occur, including infection, bleeding, or damage to surrounding organs.

Jeevan is happy to discuss your situation and benefits of a laparoscopy in an individual basis.
