Laparoscopic Myomectomy

What is Laparoscopic Myomectomy?

Laparoscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive procedure where several small incisions (usually 3-4) are made in the abdomen. A laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light, is inserted through one incision to view the uterus and fibroids on a monitor. Specialised instruments are then used through the other incisions to carefully remove the fibroids. Depending on the size and location, the fibroids are either removed in pieces through the small incisions or extracted using a technique called morcellation through a larger incision.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Myomectomy

1. Smaller incision lead to less tissue damage, reduced pain, and faster healing.

2. Patients typically experience a quicker return to normal activities and shorter hospital stays compared to open surgery.

3. Minimally invasive techniques often result in less blood loss during surgery.

4. Smaller incisions lead to smaller scars, improving cosmetic outcomes.

5. The laparoscope provides a magnified view of the surgical area, enhancing precision during the procedure.

6. Myomectomy is an option for women who want to retain their uterus and potentially become pregnant.

7. Laparoscopic surgery can minimize the risk of adhesions (scar tissue) forming after surgery.

8. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy provides enhanced precision and control through specialized robotic arms.

Considerations

Laparoscopic myomectomy may not be suitable for all women, particularly those with very large or multiple fibroids.

Morcellation, the process of removing fibroids through small incisions, has been associated with risks like the potential spread of undetected cancerous cells. However, safety protocols and alternative techniques are available to mitigate these risks. Jeevan is happy to discuss these in detail in your consultation about the surgery.

Surgeon Skill: The success of laparoscopic myomectomy depends on the surgeon’s expertise and experience, particularly in intracorporeal suturing (suturing inside the body). Jeevan has extra training and expertise in performing these skills for your benefit and safety.

Laparoscopic myomectomy is a valuable option for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids who wish to preserve their uterus and potentially maintain their fertility. It offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery, but it’s important to discuss the procedure and potential risks with Jeevan to determine if it’s the right choice for your individual situation.
